034 Motorsport - Catch Can Kit - Audi B9 EA839 RS4/RS5 2.9TT - 034-101-1018.

Upgrade your failure-prone PCV breather hose with the high-performance, 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit, engineered for enhanced durability to capture crankcase oil deposits before entering your intake tract. The 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit isn't just an upgrade for tuned vehicles - it's a critical safety enhancement for all EA839-equipped vehicles.

The PCV breather hose on the EA839 relies on a pair of internal check valves to switch between ventilation pathways and prevent the loss of crankcase vacuum or entrance of boost pressure to the engine crankcase; however, these factory components are prone to premature failure. Once these check valves fail, they can no longer regulate crankcase pressure properly, potentially allowing hot oil to escape and causing serious engine damage, including the risk of fire. This issue can occur on bone-stock vehicles or vehicles tuned with Stage 1, 2, or 3 power levels. A development vehicle in our video Ashes to Asphalt experienced a worst-case scenario of a PCV system failure, highlighting the potential severity of this problem.

The 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit is designed to replace this PCV breather hose system with a re-engineered breather hose and high-capacity catch can to trap crankcase oil deposits before they enter the turbocharger inlet and charge the air system. This kit offers increased reliability of crankcase ventilation on the EA839 V6 at all power levels and an additional layer of protection over the standard 034Motorsport Breather Hose replacement.

Upgrade your failure-prone PCV breather hose with the high-performance, 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit, engineered for enhanced durability to capture crankcase oil deposits before entering your intake tract.

The PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, on the EA839 is located on bank 2 of the engine (The right side of the engine). It is designed to ventilate the engine's positive crankcase pressure through a breather hose into the intake tract or charge air system. The 034Motorsport Catch Can was engineered to improve upon the factory PCV system, implementing a baffled Billet Aluminum Catch Can to trap crankcase oil deposits before entering your intake tract. The Catch Can Kit utilizes a re-engineered breather hose that plays an integral role in this ventilation system.

How Does the PCV System Operate? The Positive Crankcase Ventilation System, or PCV for short, works to remove excess pressure from the crankcase system and relies on vacuum from the engine's intake system to operate properly. This system operates with two components, an Air Oil Separator and a Breather Hose.

In the EA839, crankcase pressure is generated by the engine rotating assembly moving under normal operation, and can contain oil in the form of liquid & vapor, water vapor from condensation, and blow-by gases. The Air Oil Separator acts as a collection chamber for this crankcase pressure and oil, separating some, but not all of the oil and water vapor, allowing the oil to drain back into the engine oil pan. The crankcase pressure not caught in this chamber is evacuated through the breather hose to be ingested by the engine.

At idle or cruising while not in boost, the engine's charge air system operates under vacuum, drawing air in continuously. During this state, the breather hose utilizes this vacuum to release crankcase pressure into the charge air system through the connection just after the throttle body.

However, when the vehicle is under boost (during acceleration), this connection becomes pressurized, meaning it can no longer provide a vacuum source for crankcase ventilation. When this happens, a check valve in the breather hose closes off this connection, preventing boost pressure from entering the crankcase. At this point, the breather hose is able to draw vacuum from the turbo inlet connection, as this creates vacuum through a siphoning effect as the turbocharger draws air in through the intake.

Whether you are sitting at a stoplight or romping on a backroad, a properly operating PCV system is crucial for maintaining the engine's performance and preventing harmful pressure buildup.

Why is the OE PCV System Insufficient?

The check valves within the factory breather hose are an integral component of ensuring correct operation. However, since these check valves deal with the high temperatures of an engine bay and the transition between vacuum and boost pressure, they are susceptible to premature failure. When they fail, excess pressure can enter the crankcase, causing it to operate under conditions it was not designed for. In fact it's likely these are the same as what Audi uses on naturally aspirated engines, which makes them not up to the task of dealing with pressures associated with turbocharged engines.

As the crankcase of the engine is not designed to operate under pressure, it typically will find the path of least resistance to release this excess pressure. The seals and components inside your engine, which are designed to operate under vacuum, aren't built to handle this excess pressure. In some cases, the path of least resistance is unfortunately the oil cap, which can loosen and expel hot oil into the engine bay, potentially causing a fire.

Audi issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) concerning this failure of the PCV Breather Hose as of 2020, though in our testing 034Motorsport has concluded that even the newest variant of breather hose is susceptible to failure.

Some other solutions on the market neglect the importance of maintaining adequate vacuum pressure from the charge air system and intake tract to ensure proper operation of the PCV system. Because the PCV system relies on these two separate vacuum sources under normal operation, removing one would prevent the crankcase ventilation system from functioning properly.

When these solutions remove the upper intake manifold as a vacuum source, it disrupts the PCV system's ability to vent crankcase pressure at idle or in a cruising state while not in boost. Because the crankcase no longer has sufficient vacuum pressure, seals that are designed to operate with this vacuum pressure can fail prematurely. This lack of vacuum pressure can also lead to the potential of pressurization of the crankcase system and engine damage.

Additionally, many aftermarket solutions have check valves that do not provide sufficient flow to accommodate the boost levels of Stage 3 equipped vehicles. These check valves are too small and this inefficiency can cause restrictions, resulting in reduced flow from the crankcase, causing crankcase pressure to build up.

During the development of the 034Motorsport Stage 3 Dynamic+ tuning suite, the development B9 Audi S4 experienced an unfortunate OEM PCV breather hose failure. This failure caused oil to be expelled through the oil cap and onto the hot turbocharger, immediately causing an engine oil fire. This failure was documented in our video Ashes to Asphalt, documenting the extent of the damage and how 034Motorsport was able to make the most out of the situation. Because of this failure, it made engineering a proper solution that was able to withstand the harsh engine bay temperatures and elevated boost levels of utmost priority for 034Motorsport Engineers.

What is The Fix?

034Motorsport began by benchmarking the factory PCV system for flow capacity and other check valves on the market to replace the flawed breather hose design. Due to this, we opted to engineer and develop our own proprietary check valves that offer fantastic restriction less-flow capability when open, and create a strong seal when closed, capable of holding over 40+ PSI of pressure and dealing with the high temperatures this system is subject to. These check valves utilize a durable synthetic rubber diaphragm that offers superior high heat and chemical resistance.

The 034Motorsport Check Valves are housed in a high-flow, 4-ply reinforced silicone hose specially designed not to collapse or inflate under vacuum or boost pressure. These silicone hoses are molded to allow the factory engine cover to be utilized with the 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit installed.

The Billet Aluminium Catch Can is engineered to fit in line with the factory Air Oil Separator and 034Motorsport's re-engineered breather hose to capture crankcase oil deposits. The 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit allows the full PCV system to properly vent crankcase pressure while keeping oil vapor and liquid oil out of the intake tract, resulting in drastically reduced carbon buildup and extended life from the EA839. The Catch Can Body was meticulously designed to ensure it collects liquid oil and oil vapors through its baffle plate, while still allowing effective flow to vent crankcase pressure through the intake tract as designed.

This offers increased reliability of the crankcase ventilation on the EA839 V6 at all power levels and an additional layer of protection over the standard 034Motorsport Breather Hose replacement.

034Motorsport engineers designed the 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit to be used with the OEM Factory Air Oil Separator rather than design a bespoke Air Oil Separator, as we found during testing that this unit provides excellent crankcase pressure control and is capable of supporting the flow needed at Stock through Stage 3 power levels without failure.

For added convenience, there is an integrated dipstick allowing for a quick and easy way of checking levels. The Catch Can also includes an integrated drain line that allows for service-free use of the 034Motorsport Catch Can, draining the captured oil back to the oil pan.

The 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit uses OE-style multi-use connections, which allow for easy installation and removal when servicing your turbo inlet or catch can.

The 034Motorsport Catch Can Kit isn't just an upgrade for performance enthusiasts€”it's a critical safety enhancement for all EA839-equipped vehicles. It has been extensively tested on several 034Motorsport development vehicles for upwards of 2 years at varying power levels to ensure its performance and reliability, whereas the OEM breather hose can fail in as little as 3 months. The 034Motorsport Catch Can is suitable for all vehicles including those that are bone stock or upgraded with Dynamic+ Stage 1, 2, or 3 tuning!

Why Do You Want a Catch Can?

The Air Oil Separator acts as a collection chamber, capturing some of the oil and water vapor present in the crankcase while regulating pressure. Any uncollected vapors are expelled through the breather hose, and the oil captured in the air oil separator is drained back into the oil pan.

As this crankcase pressure is evacuated through the breather hose and into engine's intake tract, the uncollected vapors pass through and enter the intake system. This can cause oil to pool within the intake tract, generate carbon buildup on intake valves, or be ingested by the engine resulting in dirty combustion.

The 034Motorsport Catch Can intercepts this uncollected oil vapor with an intricate baffle that allows the 034Motorsport Breather Hose to continue venting the crankcase pressure and water vapor into the intake tract to be ingested by the engine. Once collected by the 034Motorsport Catch Can, this oil vapor pools within its large body. This decreases oil in your intake tract, reduces carbon buildup on intake valves, and results in an overall cleaner combustion process.

As the catch can system is under 212*F, it allows small amounts water vapor to condensate and mix with the oil, resulting in a milky texture. This mixture is then drained through the integrated drain line back into the oil pan, allowing the water vapor to pass through the PCV system uninterrupted and be burned off in the combustion cycle.

Within the operation of the complex PCV system, this water vapor is intended to be burnt off during the combustion process. This small amount of water that is collected in the catch can drains back into the oil pan, re-vaporizes, and re-enters the PCV system to be burnt off without causing any issues.

Works great (quick test)
Just got this and tested and works great I attached to my MacBook with Ethernet and had a solid connection I tested my steam deck by plugging in Ethernet then adding HDMI then adding power and everything worked as it was plugged in I tested my Nintendo switch even though it clearly states it's not supported and it did not work at all. Even the power pass through did nothing. This is not even remotely a problem since it was advertised as such but I figured it was with a try and worth noting

Despite some caveats; this is a versatile hub
The Anker 555 8-in-1 USB-C Hub is a good buy if you’re looking for a hub from a reputable brand. I use it with an M1 Macbook Air, and it has been reliable so far. This hub has the following ports: 1 USB-C data port, 1 USB-C Power Delivery Port, 2 USB-A data ports, 1 HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a microSD/SD card reader. Charging, PD (Power Delivery): To keep my Macbook charging, I connect a PD (Power Delivery) capable cable to the USB-C port meant for PD. (The other USB-C Port on this hub is meant only for data.) Once connected, the hub will eventually become warm to the touch, but this hasn’t caused any problems so far. Video Performance - no problems in 1440p I can connect my 1440p 144hz monitor to this hub’s HDMI port and my Macbook Air has no problem outputting a refresh speed of 144hz, as well the lower refresh rates of 120hz and 60hz. (I do not have a 4k monitor, so I could not test that.) USB-A Ports - works flawlessly I’ve tried keyboards, USB Drives, and even gaming Mice. All of these devices work as expected when connected to the USB-A Ports. Ethernet - Excellent speed I've connect this hub using an Ethernet cable to Gigabit speed Internet. The speed is just as fast as other computers on the network, and there is no slowdown at all, even with most of the ports on the hub being used. Gaming Keyboards with USB-C connectors - some issues. Some peripherals such as keyboards with USB-C connectors may not work on the USB-C ports on this hub. I tried using a Glorious GMMK Mechanical Keyboard and it did not work with this hub’s USB-C ports. (Of course you could try to simply use a USB-C to USB-A adaptor and then connect via the other USB ports on the hub instead.) Extension Cable - Use a Thunderbolt 4 cable Although this is totally optional, I like to use a small, 6-inch USB-C Extension cable to allow this hub to have more slack away from my laptop when connected. To allow this to work, I had to use a Thunderbolt 4 extension cable. I've tried other cables such as a Thunderbolt 3 extension cable. However, some of the attached devices on the hub were not recognized. Only the the Thunderbolt 4 extension cable allowed all my attached devices to be recognized. Other devices I have successfully connected an external SSD via the USB-C data port on this hub. I also regularly use an external DAC using the USB-A ports connecting to an IFI HIP DAC. Both of these devices work perfectly with this hub. Data transfer speed is rated at 10Gbs, though I haven't actually confirmed that. It works well enough for my purposes of transferring text documents and the occasional batch of vacation photos to my external SSD. Conclusion This hub from Anker is rated at 10Gbs which is plenty for me. But if you regularly transfer large amounts of data (like for video editing), I would instead recommend a powered docking station such as those from CalDigit. But for me, this portable hub does everything I need, and for much less money.

Almost perfect, could use one more USB-C Gen 2 port and a metal case instead of plastic.
Never really had any problems with Anker gear, I've come to trust the brand name. This little hub is almost perfect for use with my 2019 MacBook Pro, but where Anker really dropped the ball is by not adding one more USB-C port. I mean, there's two, but if one is dedicated to power devices only that doesn't really leave much room for expansion by only giving you one extra, I mean they were thoughtful enough to give you two USB-A ports. I do like that the USB-C and two USB-A ports are version 3.2 Gen 2 rated for up to 10Gbps transfer speeds versus Gen 1 at 5Gbps. The plastic casing does get hot, not sure if aluminum metal would be any better, but it would feel nicer, plastic just feels cheap. Also, a dark case with dark letter printing doesn't work because you can't see the writing, should have used lighter letter coloring. Otherwise, solid performer. I'll keep it along with my other one because having two hubs with a laptop is convenient so I don't have to always haul a hub around from place to place. PROS: • 1 USB-C port version 3.2 Gen 2 rated up to 10Gbps. • 2 USB-A ports version 3.2 Gen 2 rated up to 10Gbps. • Also includes, HDMI, Ethernet, SD and micro SD card ports. CONS: • Plastic casing, gets hot. • Should have one more USB-C port. • Port description lettering is too dark, gets lost against dark case color, should have used white or silver lettering instead. • No audio port.

It WORKS! I'm Back at Work. Thx to Apple for support and Amazon for fast delivery
I am thrilled to report that the Anker USB C Hub with Ethernet fixed a dire problem that nailed me when I switched from my maybe-20 year old dying wired Apple Extended Keyboard to the Macally keyboard comparable (with USB-C connection). I have a 2023 MacBook Pro 14", a lovely workhorse, with 3 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, a MagSafe power port and an HDMI port (with, it turned out, limited ability to handle UHD displays, so useless for my desk setup). It turned out my old Dockteck hub with ethernet didn't have thunderbolt capable USB-C ports, so my new MacAlly keyboard connected to that hub stopped working. On top of that, as I swapped with my Logi webcam, it also required a trickle of power the Dockteck hub didn't provide. As soon as I figured out what the issue was, I read up on several multiport adapters with ethernet, and it seemed that either I would be stuck purchasing WAY more than I needed, adding another bulky (annoying!) device on my desk surface and costing me close to $200. This seemed crazy, so I called Apple Store support. The only Apple Store multiport adapter was useless to me (and also $80) because, of all weird things, it had only ONE USB-C/Thunderbolt compatible port among 8--most ports were legacy. (Ugly too, just saying folks don't HAVE to make devices ugly!) The Apple Store rep, in one of those brilliant customer rep incidents, understood quickly the challenge, said Apple Store didn't have anything that would work for me, but SHE KNEW SOMEONE (ta-da! better than AI!) who would know and could recommend. Three minutes later she said this Anker device would work. I had it in hand by 6pm same day. So this is not just a rave for a solution that WORKS, but also a thank you to the great support from Apple to get me back to work fast. And Amazon for getting the item to me fast too!

Great as long as you know its limitations; runs warm; monitor settings may need to be changed
I reluctantly gave up MagSafe and joined the USB-C future when my employer issued me a new 2019 16" MacBook Pro. Searching for a way to connect my various peripherals I settled on this hub as a reasonable way to connect a 4K display, pass power from the laptop charger (albeit not the full 96W; macOS reports 79W after hub losses—good enough most of the time), connect 1GigE, and provide a few spare USB ports and occasionally-used SD card slots. I've learned a few things: A port that looks like USB-C does not pass video unless it is a "Thunderbolt" port (look for the lightning bolt logo, apparently); connecting a USB-C-to-mini-DisplayPort adapter to the USB-C port on this hub did not allow my monitor to work. Lesson learned. The HDMI port did work, and did pass 4K@60Hz, but only after I adjusted my monitor settings. At first I was convinced either my HDMI cable or this hub were defective, because macOS would only allow me to select 4K@30Hz. I have an LG 4K display, and from reading forums, one must enable 60Hz in the on-screen display menu before the monitor will tell the computer it is capable of displaying 60Hz video. For my monitor, that meant changing "Ratio" in "Quick Settings" to "Original" (it defaulted to "Wide", with a separate configuration for each port), as well as turning on "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" from "Picture" -> "Picture Adjust." After I changed those two settings, 60Hz was not available until I unplugged the HDMI cable from the hub and plugged it in again. After that I had buttery smooth 4K video at 60Hz. The hub works as advertised, at least for my configuration. The 1GigE port works well, and is equivalent to a direct USB-C to Ethernet adapter I tried. It does run warm to the touch as other reviewers have reported. That's not problematic, but I'd prefer it pass the missing 17W to the laptop rather than dissipate it as heat. Time will tell how well the hub holds up, but for now I'm happy. In summary: if you have a new Mac this hub will likely work for you, though you may need to adjust your monitor settings.
